Services Provided

Types of Services

1. Massage: I have been trained in relaxation and rehabilitation massage.

2. Spot or body work: This is done when the client needs specific aches and pains worked on and out. And when a full body massage is not the focus.

The bodywork can include the following modalities: Rolfing Movement Integration, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, Therapeutic Touch, Trauma Energetics, and Skillful Touch Massage. (described below)

3. Rolfing: Rolfing is done when the client would like to permanently resolve chronic pain and problem areas; when the client wants "the full treatment" including breath education, learning new ways to use their body, learn how a person ends up with chronic pain in their body and how to resolve the problem. The 10 session recipe series is described below.

4. Referrals: If you come for services that I do not provide, I will send you to a practitioner that does.

5. Work as a Team: If your healthcare goals/needs warrant more than one type of healing modality, I may ask you to consider the possibility of working in conjunction with one or more other health-care practitioners to optimize your healing process. (For more information see sheet "Multi-tasking").

Description of Services

Rolfing

Rolfing is Structural Integration. Rolfing puts your body back together. Rolfing is a highly intelligent system of deep tissue bodywork. It is a system of myofacial (connective tissue) manipulation that allows the body to align itself so it is vertical in the field of gravity. The process organizes and balances the whole person by softening and lengthening the brittle and contracted tissue that has been made less flexible and tight by age, accidents, surgery or psychological trauma. The goal of the work is structural change, it puts the body back into functional shape. Gravity is the primary principle of Rolfing. To illustrate this, let's use the following analogy: If you were to take a brand-new spring and put a kink in it and then push down on it, the force of your push will send the spring sideways. However, if you take this brand-new spring with no kink in it and apply the same force, you will receive a wonderful resonance back and the spring will remain upright and strong. (For more information please see "Questions about Rolfing").

Rolfing Movement Integration

Experience the joy of movement! Move like never before. See how to have better posture, greater athletic performance and to rehabilitate. Learn how to walk, run, stand, work, and/or do your sport more effectively/efficiently. Get acquainted with your breath, and how trauma is held in the body. Rolfing Movement is a system of movement & embodiment education. The purpose is to increase ease, joy, and efficiency of movement, to develop a more powerful sense of self, and to release the stress caused by "gravity resisting" movement patterns. It is a process of exploration, education, and self-discovery. The work is gentle and non-intrusive.

Body Psychology

There is a specific way that the body holds onto the past, its background and experience. This experience is held or "locked-up" in the cells as cellular memory. When treated with kindness and respect the body will reveal its past: its hopes, dreams, fears and ultimately its connection with the universe. Learn to understand the language your body and of the wounded parts of your body in order to unlock the old cellular memory leaving room for the new.

Body Psychology is a radically simple yet potent form of Body-Centered Therapy. It is a gentle and effective way to release stress, anxiety, depression, tension, trauma, chronic pain, and suffering. It uses visual and breath techniques to first recognize and then release and resolve stored energetic blockages held in the physical and in energetic bodies. With the use of the client's internal awareness, sensation, images, and breath, one is guided to these energetic holding places within the body / mind / spirit and a spontaneous letting go naturally occurs. The client does not need to be good at imagery or images to have good results. It works with anyone who is eager to learn and to heal.

CranioSacral Therapy

Experience the inner peace and solitude of CranioSacral Therapy. CranioSacral is a gentle, hands-on technique that evaluates and enhances the function of the craniosacral system. This system is the fluid that rhythmically fills and baths the brain and the Central Nervous System (CNS). It is a technique that balances and refreshes the CNS. It also helps detect and correct imbalances in the craniosacral system, which may be the cause of sensory, motor or intellectual dysfunction. Gentle mobilization of the cranial bones and the fascia (connective tissue throughout the body) affects the function of the nervous and endocrine systems by improving the environment in which these systems do their work. It can be extremely relaxing and rejuvenating.

Visceral Manipulation

Experience the relief of Visceral Manipulation. Visceral refers to the organs of the body. It involves releasing tension/trauma being held in such organs as the lungs, liver, kidney, stomach, small and large intestines, bladder and more. The connective tissue of the viscera has strong effects on the structure and function of the body. Releasing fixations in the visceral connective tissue can be very helpful to the Rolfing process and creating relief in your body.

Introduction letter:

Thank you for your interest in Somatic Works, and the benefits and exciting process of Rolfing!

The purpose of Somatic Works is to provide you with excellent bodywork. To lessen or relieve the pain in your physical structure and, as a result, improve your quality of life.

Rolfing (Structural Integration) is a highly intelligent system of deep tissue bodywork. Rolfing puts the body back into functional shape. You will benefit by gaining greater flexibility, alignment, strength, and body awareness. You can move through past injuries, stiffness and experience ease.

Traditionally, Rolfing is done in a 10-session recipe series that addresses the entire body from the feet up. After completing the series it is recommended to let your body process the changes for 2 to 6 months, then come back for additional sessions, called post-10. However, if your body needs more attention in a specific area, extra sessions can be added to the initial 10. Also, some individuals choose to do Rolfing nontraditionally, which means the Rolfer works only on specific areas of the body of concern and involves resolving relatively minor problems. This could include specific problems with a joint or limb.

During your Rolfing sessions, you may also wish to investigate some of the following, in order to get the most out of the Rolfing process: Movement Analysis and Rehabilitation, Homework, Understanding Trauma, Learn about your Breath. (See descriptions under, "Working with the Rolfing Process".)

In addition to Rolfing, I am trained in several other modalities that you may wish to integrate into Rolfing, or do as an alternative: Deep-tissue Massage, Rolfing Movement Integration, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation, Healing Energetics, and Therapeutic Touch. (See descriptions  under "Services Provided".)

The first day:

We will review your goals/needs, discuss any questions or concerns, and determine a specific plan for our work together. For the purpose of evaluation and for you to see your own progress, you can choose to have photographs taken before and after the work (optional).

Dress:

Remember to wear underwear for your Rolfing sessions; boxers or briefs for men, and panties and bra for women. You can also wear a two-piece bathing suit or jogging apparel.

I look forward to working with you, towards your health-care goals and a better quality of life!

All the Best,
Don Bruce
